A very good example of a keris from the northern Malaysian peninsular region of Kelantan and Patani southern Thailand. Handle in the typical Malay pistol grip or kerdas form and square top sheath in the tebeng form, are made from very well selected kemuning woods with flashing as well as contrasting grains. Bottom stem is made from finely selected angsana woods with very tight tiger’s stripe grains with a kemuning bottom tip. A thick and well repoussed white metal ferrule or pendoko completes fittings.

Sturdy blade with 9 sublime waves or luks having very well executed base features or perabots with the worn down elephant trunk like feature called akuk haus in Malay, or kembang kacang pogok in Javanese.

Pamor patterns are very condense and are arrange in the mlumah technique showing well selected metal combinations having few shades of black and white metals. With an overall contouring pattern called kulit semangko or melon’s skin, all patterns are unplanned or pamor tiban, and at the base a peak like formation of pamor tiban is seen and is called nunggak semi. It is said to enhance the popularity and status of the owner.

The blade is also very well tempered or nyepuh, and is seen from the darker shade on the top quarter of the blade.

Length of blade: 15"
Overall length: 18"
Condition: Aside from worn down trunk, rest is all in very good condition..

Although a kris smith or “empu” has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 18th century.
