A very good and rare example of a keris from the southern Sumatran region of Riau Lingga. Finely carved handle in the pistol grip or “kerdas” form is finely carved showing floral motifs as well as Islamic Arabic verses at the top with the sides having a star on one side and the sun on the other. Top sheath is made from well selected kemunign woods with flashing grains with the bottom stem of angsana woods, and a thick gilded brass pendoko or ferrule to complete the fittings.

Thick and very sturdy blade is straight or lurus but having and angular profile that is called sepokal in Malay. The base cross piece or ganjar is also made one with the blade and is called ganjar seiras.

Pamor patterns are rare and shows peak like formations from the base to the tip, and this is called pamor junjung darjat or enhancement of status.

This keris won the 2nd prize in it’s category during the last keris competition held here in Singapore in February 2024.

Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers’ name. Although a kris smith or “empu” has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.
