A rare example of a slashing keris from the southern Philippine region of Mindanao, called the keris sundang. Hard and well grained wooden handle in the rather cylindrical form with a flat top, with the straight wooden sheath exposing base of blade, encased with white metal bands having a small wooden protrusion at the front to assist in wearing.

Very sturdy blade with 11 waves or luks and very well executed base features or perabots.

Pamor patterns are forged in the mlumah technique showing a central core at the middle of the blade called pamor kulit semangko or melon skin pamor.

Condition: Aside from missing hilt blade contraption called the baca-baca, rest is all in very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers’ name. Although a kris smith or “empu” has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the early to middle 19th century.
