From the southern Thailand region of Patani, Chenook, this extremely rare example has the hilt encased with silver and in the form called the coteng. Rarer than the tajong or kingfisher, but sharing similarities and form, showing NOT a bird, but a squatting figurine with nasal horn, teeth and fangs etc.

Top sheath is made from well grained hard petai woods with the bottom stem having plain silver bands and made with a middle split which is unusual in other regions but common from the region.

Sturdy blade with sublime 7 waves or luks and base features or perabots typical of the region’s styles.

Very well arranged pamor patterns are forged in the mlumah technique of the kulit semangko or melon skin pamor, with a peak like unplanned pattern at the base called nunggak semi in Javanese.

This piece was featured in a publication by Karsten Sejr Jensen back the 2005.

Length of blade: 11"
Overall length: 16.25"
Condition: Aside from restored hilt’s tip nasal horn, rest is in very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers’ name. Although a kris smith or “empu” has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the early to middle 18th century.
