Keris Bugis Sulawesi Sepokal Pamor Luwuk.
Sulawesi Sepokal Pamor Luwuk
- A good and rare example of a keris froom the southern Sulawesi regions of Bugis.
Handle is well carved in the kerdas form is made from dark kenaung
woods with the top sheath or sampir in the typical Bugis tebeng
form, made of hard and very well selected kemuning woods with natural
flashing grains. Bottom stem is made from angsena woods with tiger’s
stripe grains having a flaring kemuning wooden bottom tip. A well reposed
thick brass ferrule or pendoko to complete fittings.
Thick and very sturdy blade is rather short, with plain base features and an angled profile, has an overall shape or dapor called sepokal in Malay, and is rather common to find this form from the region. With a flat surface and angled edge, making it having a hexagonal cross section that is also common in Bugis blades.
Pamor pattern are very condense and are arranged in the mlumah of the wos utah or scattered rice variations. With all patterns unplanned or pamor tiban, on one side of the blade a peak like formation is seen, which is an unplanned pattern and appropriately called ujung gunung. The presence of brightly whiter pamor lines strongly suggest the use of the highly sought pamor luwuk, which come from the southern Sulawesi region.
The pamor wos utah is said to enhance the owner’s material well being while the pamor ujung gunung is said to enhance the owner’s status.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle to late 19th century.
Length of blade: 10". Overall length: 14.3".
